Is God in your Beach Bag?
Volume 7.5 | June 2010

Beach Bag Books
by Emily Ryan, Executive Editor

There is nothing more relaxing than reading outside in the summer.  My favorite place to read is in the shade while lying on a hammock by the lake, but if I find myself at the beach or by a pool, I’ll take that as well!  If you’re looking for some good and easy reads to add to your beach bag over the next few months, here are some of my favorite series from wonderful Christian authors that are sure to provide hours upon hours of summer fun and relaxation.  There’s something for mystery lovers as well as romance enthusiasts, so I’m sure you’ll find something engaging to suit your tastes. (listed in no particular order)

Cape Refuge The Cape Refuge Series by Terri Blackstock – a great murder/suspense series set in the peaceful Cape Refuge community.  I love reading about sisters Blair and Morgan, and while an element of romance adds an intriguing subplot throughout the series, the latest mystery always remains at the forefront.  (4 books)
Restoration The Restoration Series by Terri Blackstock – a creative what-if series that opens with a mysterious global phenomenon that forces all civilization to an existence without any modern technology or conveniences.  And when the whole town is in the dark and everyone is forced to survive without the luxuries that have become so commonplace, you can only imagine what kinds of mystery and intrigue rise to the surface. (4 books)
Million Dollar Mysteries The Million Dollar Mysteries Series by Mindy Starns Clark – This is probably my favorite mystery series to date! It follows a young widow named Callie who has a fascinating job as a private investigator and a boss who is so shrouded in mystery himself, she’s never even met him. While murders seem to follow her wherever she goes, she bounces between solving the latest mystery, grieving for her late husband, and trying to figure out who exactly it is that she’s working for. (5 books)
Christy Miller The Christy Miller Series by Robin Jones Gunn – This is the perfect series for the younger You Glo Girl! readers to read while they’re waiting for Beauty by the Book for Teens to come out this fall!  Fourteen-year-old Christy gets to know herself, her God, and a super-cute surfer named Todd in this coming-of-age series set against the backdrop of California’s beautiful Newport Beach. It’s a series I fell in love with as a teen, and it’s been beautifully updated for today’s electronic generation.  * On a whim I contacted Robin before we had our Beauty by the Book for Teens taping last month, and she generously donated three of the Christy Miller books for us to give away as door prizes throughout the event! Thank you, Robin!  The girls loved them! (12 books in 4 volumes)
Glenbrooke The Glenbrooke Series  by Robin Jones Gunn – This series follows eight different women with eight different stories all tied together by the common thread of the quiet and quaint Glenbrooke, Oregon.   In addition to the tasteful but satisfying romances that pop up in each book, you’ll also love finding out what happened to a few of Christy Miller’s friends throughout the series! (8 books)

If you don’t find the books you’re looking for at your local Christian bookstore, try ordering them straight from the author’s website. (Sometimes you can even get autographed copies this way!) Or if your church has a library, you may even find them there!

Lastly, there’s one final story I have to share.  About three months after speaking to a group of ladies about the importance of reading the Bible on a regular basis, I had one young lady approach me just yesterday and say, “You know, I just want you know that you really inspired me to read my Bible!” I was thrilled and I wanted to know how she was doing three months later.  “Well, I had to finish reading the Twilight series first,” she said. “But now that I’m done, I’m really going to start reading my Bible now!”

If you’ve read You Glo Girl! for long, or if you’re familiar with Priority at all, you know that we believe God’s Word should be a Priority in our lives!  So if reading fiction – even Christian fiction – is going to take you away from reading God’s Word this summer, I’m going to issue this challenge to you. (And you know who you are!) Each day, don’t read even one word in your current novel until AFTER you’ve read your Bible that day.  Christian books can be great assets to your spiritual growth, but don’t let satan trick you into settling for the next-best-thing.  Bible first.  Other books second. That’s the way it should be ladies.  Even on the beach.

One Year BibleAnd to make it even easier for you to meet this challenge, I have one last recommendation for your beach bag.  It’s a One-Year Bible with a twist that’s just in time for summer! This version has the Bible broken up into four separate books with a different book for each season. For example, the Summer book has your Bible readings for each day in July, August, and September in a light, easy-to-carry paperback that will fit perfectly beside your novel, your sunscreen, and your beach towel!

What are your favorite books from Christian authors?  I’d love to hear about the books you love so I can pack my own beach bag!

Biblically Beautiful Teens

Beauty GroupWe had a wonderful time with the 22 girls who helped us tape Laurie’s video messages for Beauty by the Book for Teens last month!  It was an amazing weekend, and we are so excited to be one step closer to finalizing the project so young ladies all over the country can learn God’s truths about inner beauty.  Would you like to see more pictures from the weekend? Visit our website scrapbook page and check out more photos of the set, the crew, the girls, and the fun we all had! Thank you so much for your prayers!

We hope you enjoyed this month’s abbreviated version of You Glo Girl!  Our regular style issue will be back next month, but until then we’d love to hear about how you’re including God in your summer plans (and in your beach bag)!
