"Top Five" Women of Influence

This month’s issue of You Glo Girl! is dedicated to all of the moms and other very special women in our lives who gloglorify God – and influence us to lead godly lives. As you remember the spiritual role models – glo girls – God has placed in your life, may you be inspired and encouraged to glo, too.


"Top Five" Women of Influence

This month, I want to introduce you to some very special women. It’s no overstatement to say they are the most spiritually influential women in my life. As you meet them, I pray you’ll be reminded of the godly women in your life and that you’ll be inspired to become a woman of influence yourself. So, without further adieu, allow me to introduce you to the top five women God has used in my life:

1)        Julia McKay – my mother. Without a doubt, my mother is the most consistent, Christ-centered example God has placed in my life. Strong and gentle, wise and humble, fearless and faithful, her godly life is an ongoing source of inspiration to me.

Who are the consistent, Christ-centered women in your life?
Thank God for them, and ask Him to make you a consistent, Christ-centered woman of influence, too.

2)        Georgia Kern – my first women’s Bible study teacher. Sitting under her gracious, encouraging teaching, witnessing her passionate, prayerful love for God whet my own spiritual appetite. The Lord also used her to affirm His call upon my life to teach.

Who are the gracious and encouraging women in your life?
Thank God for them, and ask Him to make you a gracious, encouraging woman of influence, too.

3)        Kay Arthur – Precept Ministries. Although I do not know her personally, God used her in-depth Bible studies and the inductive Bible study training I received through Precept to transform my life and to equip me to study His Word.

Who has God used to teach and equip you to love and live God’s Word?
Thank God for them, and ask Him to use what He’s taught you to enable you to teach and influence others as well.

4)        Women of the Priority Ministries Staff – my friends and partners in ministry. Within each of these loving, joyous, gifted women beats a heart that is strong and courageous. Women of faith, they have devoted themselves to follow God wherever He leads.

Who are the strong and courageous women in your life?
Thank God for them, and ask Him to make you a strong and courageous woman of influence, too.

5)        Women of the WOW Class – my former Sunday School class. An amazing assembly of women of all ages, their desire and commitment to know God and grow in His Word surpasses the trials and testings so many of them face.

Who are the women you’ve known who have persevered in their faithin the midst of trials?
Thank God for them, and ask Him to use the trials in your life to grow your faith and relationship with Him.

So, who are the most spiritually influential women in your life? Who would you include on your “top five” list? As Mother’s Day draws near, I encourage you to let them know how God has used them in your life. And if you’ve been praying as you’ve been reading this article, asking God to make you a woman of influence, I want to encourage you with this promise:

“If we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.
And if we know that he hears us…
we know that we have what we asked of him.”
1 John 5:14-15 NIV

Congratulations! You just took the first step toward a future spot on someone else’s “top five” list! You’re on your way to becoming a woman of influence.

Who are your spiritual “mothers” and role models? How have their lives inspired you to love God most and seek Him first? As you seek to follow their godly examples, make Psalm 63:1 your prayer and priority:

Journey with Laurie and Janet

April was amazing! Laurie and I traveled to events in West Texas and on the West Coast. When I think about the wonderful women we met, I am reminded of a song from my childhood: “Make new friends but keep the old – one is silver and the other gold.” Journey with us and meet some of our precious old AND new friends as you enjoy a few pictures and read about our April events.

On April 20 – Laurie spoke in Amarillo , Texas at Springfest 2007 held at Paramount Baptist Church .  Many of you may have heard her speak of her days in Amarillo and how sweet her memories are of those times.  It was then that Laurie began to really study the Bible in-depth and began to feel God’s call to teach.

Springfest also included sessions designed for the men and teens.  Many came to know the Lord as their personal Savior that weekend. Praise Him!


Five short days later, we packed our bags and headed West again to California for a Women’s Retreat with Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley . For this trip, we brought some of our good friends with us – Pam Henderson, Shanda Stiles and Debbie Todd!

We flew into LAX and were not disappointed to find the weather absolutely fantastic.  The coast was wonderful and the ocean breathtaking.  We saw dolphins, sea lions, and (we think) a whale.  God’s majestic creation is something to behold. We were praising Him often! 

Our first stop was Simi Valley , Ca where I had the joy of reuniting with a sweet friend from my past.  Please meet Laurie Gourley.

After resting and eating some great food,  we headed north on the coastline to a beautiful resort called The Cliffs where we met many new friends from Cornerstone Community Church .

These spiritually vibrant women really ministered to us gifting us with a wonderful retreat experience, too. Every detail was designed to make us feel special and welcome.  The praise music brought us into the proper attitude to receive Laurie’s teaching on the seasons of life.  Each session was powerful and many hearts and lives were changed.  Please meet some of our new California girlfriends.

During the weekend Laurie exhorted the women of Cornerstone for their hunger for God’s Word. She noticed several women with tattered Bibles whose pages were well-worn and marked up indicating much time spent in God’s Word. Please meet Angela Larcomb.

God was so faithful to show us His power and grace as we attended these events. Our prayer is that we will always glorify Him as we encourage and equip women to love Him most and seek Him first.

Taming Your Chatter Box

“Those who control their tongue will have a long life;
      opening your mouth can ruin everything.”

Proverbs 13:3 NLT

It all started when the phone rang. “Oh, I just called to tell you what HE did today,” said the voice on the other line. With little hesitation, I jumped right on the roller coaster and the bumpy gossip ride began. It had its ups and downs, but it mostly left me feeling worse about that person than I did before.

I’m pretty sure you’ve experienced similar “thrill rides” in your lifetime. It may have seemed okay at the time. Maybe you justified that conversation as purely informational, or maybe you posed it as a prayer request. Whatever the excuse, the truth is “opening your mouth can ruin everything.”

Now don’t get me wrong, words are quite necessary in our daily lives, but we have the power to choose not to take part in chatter that we know will only lead to sin and bitterness. Instead of sending flaming “word” arrows at our foes, we can choose to combat a negative spirit with godly words.

The Book of Proverbs says that godly words are a life-giving fountain that encourage many and bring healing. So just what is a godly word? Glad you asked! Godly words will pass the P48 test (Philippians 4:8).

“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” NIV

If the Lord is pricking your heart about this issue today, I invite you to pray this prayer with me:

“Dear Lord, forgive me for speaking in a way that did not glorify you. I need your help to control my tongue. Change my heart and help me to see the negative consequences of my actions. You have called me to love and be a light for a world that is lost and hurting. Father, let my words reflect you in every conversation I have. Thank you for loving me and setting me free.”

Glo-ing in the Kitchen

As Mother’s Day draws near, I find myself thinking about my own beloved mom and the many special ladies who made a difference in my life. Think about the wonderful friends, special Sunday School teachers, neighbors, loving aunts, or family friends you’ve known.  Why not carve out some time to fix a special lunch for your mom or for one of those special women to let them know just how much they mean to you?

Keep lunch simple with a no-fuss table setting, some beautiful springtime flowers, and these two easy and delicious recipes – you’re in for a wonderful afternoon with a very special lady. Enjoy!

CLASSIC COBB SALAD

1 ripe avocado, peeled, chopped
1 tablespoon lemon juice
8 slices bacon, diced, crisply cooked *
1 10-oz. bag mixed salad greens
2 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves, grilled, chopped
4 plum tomatoes, quartered
½ cup crumbled bleu cheese
2 hard cooked eggs, chopped
4 green onions, sliced
½ cup Roasted Garlic Vinaigrette Dressing

Toss avocado with lemon juice.  Place in large salad bowl.  Add all remaining ingredients, except dressing; mix lightly.

Spoon onto salad plates, drizzle with dressing.

* Turkey bacon works great and saves calories and grams of fat.

DECADENT CHOCOLATE CAKE WITH RASPBERRY SAUCE

Cake
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips (6 oz.)
½ cup butter
½ cup all-purpose flour
4 eggs, separated
½ cup sugar

Sauce
1 10-oz. box frozen raspberries, thawed, drained and juice reserved
¼ cup sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1 to 2 tablespoons orange zest

Glaze
½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons light corn syrup

Garnish

½ cup whipped cream
Fresh raspberries

  1. Heat over to 325 degrees.  Grease bottom and side of a 9-inch round cake pan with shortening.  In 2-quart heavy saucepan, melt 1 cup chocolate chips and ½ cup butter over medium heat, stirring occasionally.  Cool 5 minutes.  Stir in flour until smooth.  Stir in egg yolks until well blended; set aside.
  2. In large bowl, beat egg whites with electric mixer on high speed until foamy.  Beat in ½ cup sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until soft peaks form.  Using rubber spatula, fold chocolate mixture into egg whites.  Spread in pan.
  3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.   Cool 10 minutes.  Run knife along side of cake to loosen and invert on cake rack.  Cool completely, about 1 hour.
  4. Meanwhile, add enough water to reserved raspberry juice to measure 1 cup.  In 1-quart saucepan, mix ¼ cup sugar and the cornstarch.  Stir in the 1 cup raspberry juice and thawed raspberries.  Heat to boiling over medium heat.  Boil and stir 1 minute.  Place small strainer over small bowl.  Pour mixture through strainer to remove seeds; discard seeds.  Stir in orange zest; set aside.
  5. Place cake on serving plate.  In 1-quart saucepan, heat glaze ingredients over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until chips are melted.  Spread over top of cake, allowing some to drizzle down side.
  6. For serving – place 1-2 tablespoons of sauce on individual dessert plate.  Place a wedge of cake on top of the sauce, garnish with whipped cream and fresh raspberries.
