Holiday Hospitality: How to be the Hostess with the Most-est
by Laurie Cole, Founder & President

The holidays are here, and you know what that means: Company’s coming! But don’t panic. All you need to know are five fundamentals, and none of them require a master’s degree in Martha Stewart perfectionism. Even if you’re a novice hostess, you can be the hostess with the most-est by practicing the Five Fundamentals of Hospitality.

In Jesus’ day, the people of the Middle East were known for their hospitality. They welcomed guests into their homes frequently and provided for them in five specific ways. If you want to be the hostess with the most-est – and bless your holiday guests and family members to the max – follow these five fundamentals of Middle Eastern hospitality:

The 5 Fundamentals of Hospitality*

  1. Accommodations: In the Middle East , even peasants who lived in a one-room house or tent welcomed and accommodated guests. So don’t let the size of your home discourage you from practicing hospitality. Before company arrives, do clean and declutter your home especially the kitchen, den, dining area, and bathroom. If you’re expecting overnight guests, prepare a clean, comfortable place for them to sleep. Also, be sure to provide plenty of seating for company. If you’ve got a large group coming, borrow extra chairs or purchase several of the plastic, stackable, outdoor chairs (they’re inexpensive and surprisingly comfortable).

  2. Greetings: Although you’ll likely be very, very busy when your company arrives, greet them personally at the door with a smile on your face. Welcome them warmly, and let them know how happy you are they’ve come. Hugs and even kisses are appropriate for those you know well, but don’t overdo it by being physically affectionate with those you’ve never met before. Greeting guests was a must in the Middle Eastern home, but the type of greeting depended upon the relationship and closeness of the guest.

  3. Feasting: Food. Meals. Yum! The people of the Middle East loved to eat and feast as much as we do, and just think: everything had to be made from scratch. Fortunately, we’ve got refrigerators, freezers, grocery stores, and so much more to help us as we plan meals for the holidays. Because food is the centerpiece of every holiday gathering, plan your menu now and get those groceries as soon as possible. Do as much ahead of time as you can, and don’t be afraid to ask others to bring a casserole, dessert, or one of their family’s favorite dishes. Too many cooks? Impossible!

  4. Entertainment: As in board games, cards, touch football, singing around a piano, sitting on the porch visiting and, OK, maybe even watching a football game together. Middle Eastern people loved music and dancing at their gatherings but, above all, they were storytellers. Encourage your elder family members to share their stories and memories. Laughter and inspiration are sure to follow.

  5. Protection: A guest in the Middle Eastern home received protection from the weather, from hunger, and from robbers who preyed upon strangers. We protect our guests by providing a safe place where they will experience love and acceptance and enjoy the fellowship of family and friends. This means that you cannot allow squabbles to erupt or criticisms to be lobbed at your guests. But if this happens, you must intervene in a loving but firm way and take steps to protect your guests. If you anticipate or have experienced problems at past family gatherings, be prayerful and proactive. Let your “problem people” know ahead of time that they should not attend if they cannot control their anger and their words.

My grandmother is to hospitality what Kristi Yamaguchi is to ice-skating. Grandmother makes hospitality look easy, effortless, and even fun. How does she do it? Like Kristi, Grandmother earned her gold medal in hospitality through many years of practice. So how can you “practice” hospitality? You begin by inviting family and friends into your home. And year after year, you just keep on inviting them. My grandmother is 94 years old, and she’s still practicing hospitality!

No, you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to be the hostess with the most-est. And speaking of Martha’s, remember when Jesus showed up at that other Martha’s house (Luke 10:38 -42)? Yikes! Which brings me to the most important thing every hostess with the most-est must do: Before company comes, spend quality time with Jesus in prayer. Ask Him to fill you with His Spirit and to enable and empower you to love and serve your guests as though He Himself were coming to your holiday gathering . . . because after all, He is.

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling . . . If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.”

1 Peter 4:8-11 (NIV)

Jots from Janet
by Janet Valentine, Director of Marketing & Events

It was our last stop on our going and glo-ing 2009 speaking calendar, and it was glo-rious! Because of my illness (myelofibrosis – a rare form of leukemia), I haven’t been able to travel with Laurie to every event this year. But praise the Lord, I am so grateful to report that I’m feeling better and was able attend our final event this year. Can’t wait to tell you all about it!

On Friday, Nov. 13, Laurie taught Beauty by The Book at Fairmont Park Baptist Church in LaPorte, Texas, at their Ladies Night Out.

She shared the truths of this powerful Bible study to a room filled with beautifully and creatively decorated tables in varying themes and approximately 175 women eager to hear God’s Word.

Our table hostess-with-the-most-est was Maxine Ducksworth, pictured here with Laurie.
Please also meet two new friends: Pastor’s wife, Nancy Spears (seated) and Dale David (right). We appreciated all of you ladies so much!

We were blessed to see the men of Fairmont Park Church offer their support and hospitality to the Women’s Ministry by providing valet service on the parking lot (glory!) and by escorting each woman to her table. They also served the meal and showed true servant hearts as they cleared and cleaned the dishes!

This was the final event on Laurie’s 2009 speaking calendar, and it was such a blessing to with these sweet ladies. Fairmont Park Church will begin Priority’s Beauty by The Book Bible study in January. What a joy it is to welcome many, many of them who subscribed to You Glo Girl!  as our new glo girlfriends this month.

We pray that you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving with friends and family, and that you will take time to recall all that the Lord has done for you this past year. He is sooooo good to all of us!

Priority Prayer Points

by Nancy Campbell, Prayer Director

Calling all intercessors! Please join us in praying for the following requests:

  1. Pray for encouragement and strength for Debbie Todd (Priority’s Director of Stewardship and Support) and her husband, Bill, who is receiving treatment for pancreatic cancer. Ask God to give wisdom and guidance to their doctors, healing to Bill, and grace to Debbie, and their children, Brittney and Brett.

  2. Praise God for the hope Janet Valentine (Priority’s Director of Events & Marketing) is experiencing as she battles a rare form of leukemia. Her doctors have recently lowered her daily drug dosage, and she is feeling better than she has felt in a very long time. Please continue to pray for her healing and for protection of her immune system.

  3. Your prayers for Laurie are so needed and appreciated as she writes a new Bible study.

How can we pray for you? It is our joy and privilege to intercede for you, so please email your specific request to me. We promise to pray for you specifically and faithfully. Thanks for praying for us and for allowing us to pray for you, too!

Email your request to Nancy.

Glo-ing at Home
by Jan Hart, Administrative Support

The excitement is building at our house as preparations for Thanksgiving surge into high gear.  My granddaughters were here for a visit this weekend, and they are really into cooking, decorating, and food .  We came up with a Thanksgiving plan, and I thought you might enjoy using it with the children at your Turkey Day gathering.

Since our group is larger each year with additional friends and family, it is now necessary for us to have two tables.  This year I am planning to let the children decorate their own table.  This accomplishes two things – something for them to do while final preparation is being made for the meal, and they have ownership in the celebration.  Table covering  will be brown craft paper, and I will provide a basket of goodies – markers, construction paper, scissors, pinecones, berries, leaves, mini pumpkins, gourds - and let them create!  I can already hear the laughter and see the great pictures and fun memories coming out of this project!

It is so important for the holidays to be a fun and enjoyable time for all of us. But I also know the holidays can be a rather intimidating time – especially if this is your first holiday dinner.  Since organization is a key ingredient, check out this great website complete with a countdown calendar for your reference, thanksgiving recipes, and even decorations. What an awesome help for all of us.

Finally, I want to give you two recipes that are our family favorite at Thanksgiving. May you have a blessed Thanksgiving is my prayer!

Gotta Glo

Yes, the economy is tough and money is tight . . . but we’ve still got soooo much to be thankful for! At Thanksgiving and Christmastime, let’s choose to place our focus on the eternal riches we have in Christ Jesus. And although we may have to trim back our holiday plans and budget, let’s be extravagant in lavishing the Lord with our love and praise.

We gotta glo for now but before we do, know this: YOU are on our Thanksgiving list. How grateful we are to the Lord for you! Thank you for your love, support, and interest in Priority. May you and yours have a glo-rious Thanksgiving – a glo-fest deluxe – as you glo, girl!!
