The Rock Church, San Diego, California, Women’s Retreat

Thank you Karen Stevens and Teresa Holderby (Women’s Ministry Co-Leaders) for inviting Laurie to speak once again at The Rock Church Women’s Retreat on August 19-21! And thank you God, for blessing that retreat with many women publicly professing Jesus as their Savior at that retreat!  To God be the glory, great things He did that weekend!

(Click on each picture to see a bigger version.)

You know how you usually arrive at a retreat? Exhausted. But when you pull into the retreat center and these gals greet you . . .  exhaustion gone, energized ON!

What’s the secret of a Spirit-led, Spirit-anointed, God-blessed retreat? Prayer! Thank you prayer team!

Karen Stevens (right), Women’s Ministry Co-Director, prays with one of the many women she ministered to that weekend. Karen, thank you for your strong, faithful leadership and for your soft, tender heart.

And this is Teresa Holderby (right) who co-directs the Women’s Ministry with Karen. Now can you see now why God is using them in such a mighty way? Teresa, we love you!

Rockin’ worship with
the women of The Rock!

The theme of the retreat was The God of New Beginnings: From Bitter to Sweet. Wonderful theme!

Laurie’s text for the weekend was one of her favorite books: Ruth (and we’re pretty sure many women that weekend discovered it was one of their favorites, too).

Icing on the retreat cake: Bill! This is the second women’s retreat this year where he’s been invited to sing, and Laurie says it always makes her teach better.

No Room
by Emily Ryan, Executive Editor

It’s only October, and I’m sure you’ve noticed that retail stores already have their Christmas displays up. It used to bother me, but I’ve since realized that I’m just as guilty for jump-starting the holidays as they are. I’m already gathering ideas on what to buy my family for Christmas; I’m already working on Christmas-themed articles for our church magazine; and my husband is already working on our Christmas services at church.

And it’s still over ten weeks away!

So lately, as I’ve been thinking about the upcoming holidays and how it’s always a challenge to keep Christ as the center of Christmas, this familiar verse has come to mind: “And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.” Luke 2:7 KJV

No room. You’ve probably thought about that inn keeper just like I have. You may have even heard him mentioned in a sermon or two as someone who “missed Christmas.”

“How sad…” the sermon begins. “If that inn keeper had only known that it was Jesus, the long awaited Messiah, who needed a room that night, might he have found room for Mary and Joseph?” And then the preacher gives a stern warning to all who are listening that if we’re not careful, there won’t be room for Christ in our Christmas season either. And we’re convicted. And we try better. And we make it a point to honor Christ on His birthday. “No Room” sermon = success!

But then I came across this verse today and it changed my whole thinking. To me, it is one of the saddest verses in the whole Bible:  “In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.” Psalm 10:4 NIV

Yes, it’s sad that there was no room in the inn for baby Jesus on the miraculous day of His birth. Yes, it’s sad that some people get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of Christmas that they don’t even honor Christ on His birthday.

But what’s even sadder is that, for some people, there is no room for God even in their thoughts!

Here's where Laurie will be going and glo-ing soon.  Please pray.  Thanks!

Priority Bible studies

And let’s face it, sometimes there is no room for God even in our own thoughts. We get side-tracked with doubt, distractions and Self to the point where God’s truth falls to the wayside. If Satan can get you to think about anything but God, he’s won. Your mind truly is a battlefield, and the only way to win is to filter every thought through God’s Word.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

Is there room in your thoughts for God? If there’s room in your thoughts for Christ now, there will be plenty of room in your manger for Christ later.

Glo-ing at Home
by Jan Hart, Administrative Support

Here in the coastal south, pumpkin patches are scarce so nothing signals the arrival of fall like the first load of pumpkins delivered to your local grocery store. I am thrilled to say, “They’re here!” For many of you long-time glo-girls, you already know - fall is my favorite season. Each year around the middle of August, I start dreaming of pumpkins in flower beds, pumpkins on the front porch, pumpkins on tables, mantles, everywhere! I have come to realize this fetish goes a bit deeper because it also signals the coming season of focusing on thankfulness and fun-filled family gatherings.

Recently I asked my wonderful husband to bring down the tote of fall decorations from the attic. He promptly asked, “Which tote?” to which I replied, “The tote,” to which he replied, “There is more than one!” Sure enough, there are many, and I was thrilled. It’s funny how you forget from year to year that you have added to your “stash,” but isn’t it fun when you see all the wonderful decorations!

I always purchase a few “real” pumpkins, and this year I found the most awesome “different” pumpkin. Soon I found out that I was the only member of my family who thought it was great. I received comments like, “Ugh,” “Really, Mom,” “What is that?” I just kept decorating and that pumpkin has a very prominent place in my decorations!!

Of course, no fall season would be complete without baking some pumpkin goodies. Let me share a special cake with you from years gone by. It’s a winner for the fall season!
