The Scoop: April-May News from Laurie

June 1, 2016 by Laurie Cole Leave a Comment

The Scoop Header

April and May were a blessed blur for all of us at Priority Ministries. The Lord provided many opportunities to do precisely what He’s called us to do: encourage women and girls to give Him priority. So join us in praising Him as we share the April-May scoop with you!

Redefining Beauty Girls Event at Champion Forest Baptist Church, Houston, TX: April 8-9

Question: What do you get when you take one Girls Minister with a heart to help girls discover how beautiful they are to God?

Answer: At Champion Forest Baptist Church in Houston, you get 225+ junior high and high school girls showing up for the Redefining Beauty weekend! Frances De la O, the amazing and godly Girls Minister at CFBC, was led by the Lord to plan and create this wonderful weekend for girls, and I was overjoyed and honored when she invited me to speak. The cherry on top was the blessing of meeting these beauties…

Avery, Clara, Mallory, and Aubrey (l-r).Special thanks to my sweet friend, Nannette Burrage, for sending me this pic — Avery and Aubrey are her precious granddaughters.

The Redefining Beauty weekend was all about encouraging and equipping girls in God’s Word and teaching them the truth about beauty. In a culture where so many girls are struggling with eating disorders, body-image issues, and self-harming themselves, it’s no wonder the Lord placed this very special weekend on Frances De La O’s heart. And she was obedient.

How I thank the Lord for Frances and Champion Forest Church! If you or your church would be interested in organizing a similar event for girls, I would highly encourage you to contact her for more info. And I would also encourage you to consider leading my Beauty by The Book for Teens Bible study with a group of girls (if you’ll lead the group, I’ll be happy to do the teaching via these free videos).

God can use you to make an eternal difference in the lives of girls. All you have to do is be obedient — just like Frances was.

Sagemont Church Women’s  Conference, Houston, TX: April 9

I love Sagemont Church. It’s my home church. But sweetest of all, it’s my church family.

Every three years, our Women’s Ministry hosts a fabulous Women’s Conference — and this was the year! Betsy Thompson, Sagemont’s Women’s Minister and my beloved friend, and our wonderful Women’s Ministry team plan and pray over this event for years. So it was no surprise when God showed up and blessed the Fearless Women’s Conference in a big way.

Sagemont Conference

Angie Smith (author of Seamless, a fantastic Bible study for women), was our guest speaker and People and Songs led our glorious worship. But there were also some great break-out sessions . . .

…and I was invited to lead one of them!  My topic was Do it Afraid. It was based upon one of the most powerful truths the Lord has ever taught me: you don’t have to feel strong and courageous to be strong and courageous. Since all of the breakouts were recorded (thank you Sagemont Media Team), and you can listen to my message and the other great breakouts right here.

One more thing: if you live in the Houston area and you’re looking for a great church with great women and a great Women’s Ministry, I want to personally invite you to come visit us. In fact, come visit Betsy and me there. Every Sunday morning at 9:30, she and I teach the Renew women’s Bible study class  in Room WC1110. Sagemont a BIG church, but don’t be intimidated. Just come, park your car wherever, and ask one of our friendly greeters to help you find our classroom. I would LOVE to see you in Renew!

Debra Lee, Victory in Jesus Evangelistic Center, Houston, TX

A few weeks ago, we had a VIP visit at the Priority Ministries office.

IMG_0457 (2)

Meet Debra Lee, the pastor’s wife and First Lady of the Victory in Jesus Evangelistic Center in Houston. Debra is one super busy woman — she’s a wife, a mom, a servant in her church, and she works at CenterPointe Energy.

But the Lord put it on Debra’s heart to offer my Beauty by The Book and Beauty by The Book for Teens study at her church. So when she came by to pick up the workbooks she needed, I was thrilled to be able to meet her in person and hug her neck.

Debra, if you’re reading this, I want to thank you again for your obedience to add one more thing to your very full plate. I continue to pray for you, your daughter, and for all of the dear sisters at Victory in Jesus Evangelistic Center.

Priority’s 2nd Annual Boot Scootin’ BBQ: April 23

Priority Ministries began 13 years ago. But one year ago, we hosted our first-ever Boot Scootin’ BBQ — and it was amazing! If we had known how wonderful an event like this could be, we never would have waited so long to do it.

With this year’s BBQ behind us, we are already looking forward to next year’s event, so save the date: Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Miss the BBQ? Here’s a little taste of what you missed. Hope to see you next year!

Over $40,000 was raised to support Priority Ministries at this year’s BBQ. A great big thanks to all of our generous sponsors, auction donors and buyers, and to everyone who made a donation that night. I am overwhelmed by your generosity and so grateful to the Lord for each and every one of you. God bless you!

Women’s Retreat, First Baptist Church, Friendswood, TX: April 29-31

I’ve been a speaker for women’s retreats for 30+ years. So trust me when I say that not all women’s retreats are created equal. The best retreats include three things: 1) They are bathed in prayer; 2) they are led by a woman with a clear purpose and vision from the Lord; and 3) they incorporate a diverse team of godly women to serve and lead at the event.

FBC Fwood Sharpened

And I witnessed all three at the First Baptist Friendswood Women’s Retreat.

FBC Fwood Cropped 2

Led by Katy Cummings (farthest left in the pic above) and a fantastic team of amazing women, the Beautiful You Women’s Retreat is one that I will never forget.

IMG_0476 cropped

Like a surprise gift from God, I had the unexpected joy of meeting Jackie and Beth Pavelka (l-r) Jackie’s daughter, Emily Seith, designed the font and graphics for my newest Bible study, Are You a Disciple? Don’t you just love it when God connects the dots in our lives like that?!

One of the highlights of the retreat was Saturday night’s Game Night. Now I gotta confess: I’ve never been much of a game girl but…

FBC F'wood Cropped

…the live-action version of Hungry, Hungry Hippos changed me! I honestly cannot remember when I’ve laughed so much at a retreat — and laughter is another absolute essential for a great retreat.

But seriously, the Lord showed up all weekend long in our large and small group sessions, during mealtimes as we sat together and got to know one another, and outdoors during free time as we enjoyed sweet conversations and alone time with God. His fingerprints were all over the entire retreat.

Thank you, First Baptist Friendswood, for inviting me to be part of a near-perfect retreat experience. It was pure joy being with you, and I hope you’ll invite me again sometime. XXXs to all of you!

Mother’s Day Luncheon, Clear Lake Nazarene, Houston, TX: May 7

In case you haven’t noticed already, all of the events and speaking opportunities the Lord gave me over the past two months have been close to home for me. But the Cleak Lake Nazarene Mother’s Day Luncheon was the closest of all!

Only a couple of miles from the Priority Ministries office, I’ve driven by Clear Lake Nazarene hundreds of times. So I was thrilled when Beverly Strong, their Women’s Mninister, invited me to speak at their annual Mother’s Day Luncheon.

CLNazarene cropped

That’s Beverly (far right), and I also had the joy of meeting several other members of her family including her daughter, her husband, and a couple of her grandkids that day.

IMG_0519

My favorite thing about the luncheon was seeing so many daughters, moms, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers together. Events like these bring the generations together, and it’s a beautiful thing.

After so many years of driving past their church, it was such a blessing meeting so many of my sisters in Christ at Clear Lake Nazarene! Thank you for allowing me to come and share God’s Word with you, and thank you for sharing your love for Him and for one another with me.

Praise & Prayer Request

That’s the scoop for April and May! Please join me in praising the Lord for every event and opportunity that He gave Priority and me to encourage and equip women to give Him priority over the past two months.

And finally, please pray that the Lord will open new doors for me and Priority in the coming months. I am now accepting speaking dates for Fall 2016 and for 2017 — and I’d be happy to speak beyond the Houston area. 🙂

If your church is planning a retreat, a Ladies Night Out, a Christmas event or Women’s Conference, I’d love to come and share God’s Word with your group. I work with all Bible-believing churches large or small, and I’d love to visit with you about the possibility of being part of your event. Just call (832/632-2197) or email me. Blessings to you!

The Scoop: March 2016 News from Laurie

March 2, 2016 by Laurie Cole Leave a Comment

The Scoop March 2016

This is me five days ago travelling to East Texas to speak at a Women’s Conference . . . with the flu:

Linden 1

I should have seen it coming. After all, the topic of the conference was spiritual warfare. But praise the Lord, I was not contagious (hallelujah for Tamiflu) and, best of all, Satan did not get a victory at the FBC Linden Women’s Conference OR at any of our other Priority events in February. Glory!

If you’re under spiritual attack, I pray the following pictures will encourage and remind you that God’s “grace is sufficient for you and [His] power is perfected in weakness,” (2 Cor. 12:9). Even if you have the flu.

February 4: Heights Baptist Church, Alvin, TX

The Red Shoe Gala is one of the highlights of the year at Heights Baptist in Alvin, TX, and this year Priority’s own Emily Ryan was the keynote speaker.

Emily 2a

The theme verse of Height’s Women’s Ministry is Psalm 25:4: “Show me the path where I should walk, oh Lord. Point out the right road for me to follow.” So, to demonstrate their desire to do just that . . .

Emily Red Shoe Gala

The Red Shoe Gala was born!  It’s a great verse, and it was a great night! Emily’s sister, Meghan Garrett, attended the event with her and served at the Priority resource table. Thank you, Meghan!

Meghan at Heights

Heights Baptist Church is reaching, discipling, and ministering to women all throughout their city and the surrounding communities. We thank the Lord for their Women’s Ministry Coordinator, Brenda McClelland, and for her heart to encourage women. Priority is so grateful to partner with Heights, and we look forward to future opportunities for outreach with this great church and women’s ministry!

February 13:  Journey of Promise Widows Ministry

This was my second year to teach at the annual Sagemont Church Journey of Promise Widows Retreat, and it has truly become one of my all-time favorite ministry events. Led by Diane Zimmerman, a widow herself, this beautiful ministry brings widows of all ages together to support, encourage, and minister to one another.

Widow's Retreat 1a

I cannot recommend Journey of Promise highly enough — every church should have a ministry like this. This group gathers regularly for dinner, fellowship, and occasionally they go to the theater and other outings. Here are a few more of their beautiful faces:

Pic 2 Journey of Promise

Some of the ladies have been widows for decades and others for only a few days. The conversations I enjoyed with them and the way I witnessed them sharing and ministering to one another that weekend was more precious than gold.

If you’re a widow and you live in the Houston area, I encourage you to contact Diane Zimmerman to find out more information about Journey of Promise. Thank you, Diane, for your leadership! And thank you, dear sisters, for allowing me to be part of your journey at the retreat. I love you all, and I treasure the time God gave us together!

February 24: Bay Area First Baptist Church, League City, TX

God is at work in a BIG way at Bay Area First Baptist Church in League City, Texas, and I was so privileged to witness it firsthand at their women’s gathering on February 24.

BAFBC 1a

I’ve been a fan of this church ever since my sons attended school there, but this was my very first time to be with the women of BAFBC for a women’s event. It was such a special delight to meet their pastor’s wife, Angela Haynes, and to enjoy a reunion with their Pastor of Discipleship & Biblical Counseling, Grant Rothberg (Grant grew up at Sagemont Church where his father is one of our favorite teaching pastors).

As I said, all three of my sons attended school at BAFBC, and they all agree that their favorite teacher of all time is Mrs. Hunt . . .

BAFBC 2a

I was overjoyed to see her at the women’s gathering! My sons knows her as their second grade teacher, but she serves now as the Elementary Principal. Thank you, Mrs. Hunt, for being a godly influence upon the lives of countless children!

My reunion with Mrs. Hunt was only one of many that I enjoyed that night. But from my standpoint, there were far more new faces in the crowd that night, and my conversations with many of them confirmed that God is at work in a BIG way at BAFBC. Please pray for pastor Brian Haynes and the Bay Area Church family as they reach their growing community for Christ.

February 26-27: Warrior Princess Women’s Conference, First Baptist Linden, TX

For 10 years, Sherry Stanfield and her faithful team of women at FBC, Linden, Texas, have been hosting an area-wide women’s conference (and I’ve been blessed with them for four of those years). This year, Shanda Stiles and Emily Ryan came with me! I taught “Warrior Princess” (spiritual warfare), and they led breakout sessions on the topics of “How to Start a Home Bible Study,” and “Guilt-Free Quiet Times.”

Linden 2a

Sherry and the women at FBC Linden have a huge heart to encourage and equip the women in their area with God’s Word. Their hospitality, friendliness, and spirit of service all throughout the weekend allowed every woman at the conference to experience God in a fresh new way.

Linden 5a

The Happy Girls led worship and praise for the event, and they truly made ALL of us happy as they shared and we sang with them.

I include the following picture of me (with the flu) only as evidence of God’s power. When we are weak, He is strong! Thank You, Lord, for giving me the strength to teach your Word.

Linden 3a

Please remember Sherry, her husband Pastor Jackie Stanfield, and all of the churches in East Texas in your prayers. Because of the economic downturn in their area, they are facing enormous challenges and great spiritual warfare right now. Pray with me that they will “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might . . . so that [they] will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil,” (Eph. 6:10-11 NASB).

We love you FBC Linden. Thank you for your love for the Lord, His church in East Texas, and for others!

That’s the scoop for March! Thanks for your interest and support for Priority Ministries. We would love to partner with you and your church to reach and teach God’s Word to women, so please feel free to contact us. Know of our love and prayers for you as you seek Him first and give God priority!

Your sister in Christ,

The Scoop: February News from Laurie

February 2, 2016 by Laurie Cole Leave a Comment

The Scoop Feb. 2016

I am thrilled this month to report that Priority Ministries and I enjoyed a fantastic January, and February is full of new ministry and outreach opportunities. Here’s the scoop along with a few pics, a praise report, and some prayer requests:

Thank You Priority Partners!

Priority’s New Year began with a generous outpouring of financial support from year-end gifts. As always, this support was much-needed, and we are so thankful for the Lord’s faithfulness and for the generosity of our Priority Partners. Thank you, beloved Partners!

Priority’s First Retreat-at-Sea

The Lord blessed big-time on the ReNEW! Retreat-at-Sea, Priority’s very first cruise. Sixty-six wonderful women (and a few equally wonderful men) participated in the Jan 2-9 cruise including a beautiful mother/daughter duo from Canada (you’ll see their pic below), and a fantastic husband and wife team from California (their pic is also below).

Mindy Ferguson, a dear friend of mine from Fruitful Word Ministries, and I hosted the 7-night/8 day Western Caribbean cruise. The priority of our trip was to get into God’s Word, learn how to make biblical resolutions, and return home renewed in our walk with the Lord. And praise the Lord, that’s exactly what He did! But He also blessed us with tons of fun and glorious fellowship.

These pictures represent only a few of the many sweet faces from our cruise – and I miss them all:

Pic 12

(l-r) That’s me, Angela Autry (my dear friend and member of Priority’s Advisory Council), and Mindy Ferguson.

Pic 9

(l-r) Sandra Jacobs and Diane Zimmerman — two long-time, much-loved friends of mine.

Pic 11

(l-r) Sydney and Guadalupe Perez — precious mother and daughter. Sydney will be enlisting in the Army soon; please pray for her.

Pic 6

(l-r) Beverly Snell, Candy Jard, Pam Jones and her sister Cheri — seeing their faces makes me want to do another cruise tomorrow.

Pic 10

(l-r) All the way from Canada, beautiful mother-daughter duo, Cecil & Christine Douglas — loved meeting them and loved every moment of fellowship with them.

Pic 3

(l-r) Virginia Hosea, Mary Ellen Vail, and LaRita McGown — what a tremendous joy and honor it was to spend time with these amazing ladies!

Pic 4

Richard & Melody Haak from California — I love this couple, and I will never forget our sweet fellowship over dinner one evening.

Pic 5

(l-r) Fabiola Amador, Gladys Markham, Graciela Morales, and Elizabeth Miller — what a blessing each one of them were to me throughout the trip!

Lord willing, Priority will plan another retreat-at-sea in 2017. And don’t worry. I’ll keep you posted because I want you to come with me next time.

Praise Reports & Prayer Requests

  • January always brings orders from around the country for our Priority Bible Studies for women. We praise the Lord for every Bible study leader and student who will be participating and growing in God’s Word through these studies. Please keep them in your prayers.
  • Emily Ryan and I are speaking at several events and retreats in February. And on Feb. 26-27, Emily and Shanda will be travelling with me to First Baptist Church Linden, TX where I will teaching and they will be leading breakout sessions. Women from 30+ churches in East Texas area will be part of this event. Many of churches there are suffering greatly because of the economy in that area of our state. Your prayers for them and for us are so appreciated.
  • My 2016 speaking calendar is still open, and I am praying and trusting the Lord to fill it up according to His will. If you or your church need a speaker for an event, retreat, or conference, I’d love to come! You can contact me by email priority@priorityministries.com or phone (1-866-968-4564). My heart’s desire is simply to go where God leads. Please pray with me that that He will open doors and provide opportunities for me to serve Him and minister to women.

Save the Date for Priority’s Boot Scootin’ BBQ!

Don’t miss Priority’s 2016 Boot Scootin’ BBQ! This year’s event will be April 23 at Sagemont Church in Houston, TX with special entertainment by LaDonna Gatlin. LaDonna grew up on stage performing with her brothers, the legendary Gatlin Brothers. You will love her music and her testimony about growing up Gatlin.

We will also have a wonderful silent and live auction, delicious BBQ and desserts, and a few other fun surprises. And just in case you’re wondering about the dress code, I’ll be wearing my boots and jeans — and you can, too!Tickets are $25, and they will go on sale soon. So, save the date, and I’ll share more details about Priority’s 2016 Boot Scootin’ BBQ with you soon. Yee-haw, y’all!

_____________________________________________________

Well, that’s the scoop for February. How I thank the Lord for you and for your interest and support for Priority Ministries. May God pour out His blessings upon you in abundance as you love Him most, seek Him first, and give Him priority!

Your sister,

LaurieSig
