Front Porch Friday: Judge Not???

Are Christians allowed to make judgments or (heaven forbid) be judgmental? After all, didn’t Jesus say in Matthew 7:1, “Judge not lest ye be judged”  (a frequent quote used by the politically correct to keep Christians quiet)?

So, what exactly does Matthew 7:1 mean? Join me on the porch for a very interesting and possibly convicting (consider yourself warned) Front Porch Friday!

Your sister,

I’d love to hear your wisdom and insights about this topic. Thanks for sharing! And if you’ve got a question for me, please post it as a comment or email it to me at priority@priorityministries.com .

Thank you for answering a question that has been on my heart for months. When a person’s sin becomes known in the church, how are we to respond? I had found Paul’s response but could not understand because “loving a sinner” as practiced by Jesus was not linked to his response. Thank you for the linkage back to Matthew 18:15!!!

I think it should be pointed out that when we make a judgement call that shows a person’s sin it is done out of love. If I did not love my fellowman I would not risk the criticism that telling the truth causes today. Sin destroys a person’s life and the reason I stand up for truth is to help bring a person into a right relationship with Jesus, not to hurt the person.

I too thank you Laurie, for addressing an issue – that I ask for anyone reading to pray for me on – whether or not confronting will cause more harm than good. The situation is complex and doesn’t involve me, other than I have been made aware of it. And my dilema is weighing the chaos that could arise from bringing the issue to the attention of the church, and perhaps be “labeled” as an alarmist or worse, bring harm to myself. At what point do we remember “the battle is the Lord’s”. Any advice?

My prayers are certainly with you, Catia. And as to “at what point do we remember ‘the battle is the Lord’s?'” At every point — from start to finish. So, pray, pray, pray, and seek God’s leadership, wisdom and timing. It’s His battle. He’ll show you your part. Love to you, dear sister.
