4 Words That Used to Bully Me – Online Study Week 4

DIS Online Study Week 4 Template Final

I never finished college. Like a big ol’ bully, those four words used to embarrass, intimidate, and threaten me from obeying God’s leadership in my life.

The primary focus of that bullying was related to the fact that God had called me to do something – teach and write Bible studies – for which I had no formal college education or degree. Even when I stepped out by faith and started teaching and leading Bible studies, I was always looking over my shoulder waiting for the real teacher – the one with the college or seminary degree – to show up.

She never did. But God did.

He taught me. He trained me. He used others to mentor and teach me (thank you, Lord, for Precept Ministries). But most of all, He empowered me.

One of my favorite verses is 1 Thessalonians 5:24: “Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it” (KJV). I cannot tell you how many times that verse has kept me moving forward when I felt like retreating, as did these:

“For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble; but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify the things that are, so that no man may boast before God. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, so that, just as it is written, ‘Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.’” 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 NASB

Precious sister, do you ever struggle with God’s calling and leading in your life? When you sense that He is leading you to do something you’ve never done before, are you bullied by a long or short list of reasons that disqualify you?

If you answered yes to one or both of those questions, I hope you discovered in this week’s Are You a Disciple? homework that the power of the Holy Spirit is greater than any bully who threatens to keep you from following and fulfilling God’s call upon your life.

The promise and call Christ proclaimed in Acts 1:8 is for every believer.

Every. Believer. Including you.

No matter how big your bully may be, the Holy Spirit is bigger — and far more powerful. So, follow Jesus, dear disciple. And if He leads you to college or seminary, to your next-door neighbor or Africa, or to anywhere or anything in between, go and know that His power will always be enough for you to follow wherever He leads.

“You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses…”  Acts 1:8 NASB

LOVE this testimony, Laurie! Oh how I can relate to it. I don’t know how many times I was stopped dead in my tracks when God gave me something to do and Satan also came along and told me that I’m not adequate. And he’s right, but CHRIST IN US is!

Love the verses you posted, too. It is so easy to overlook that we too have received the same power in Acts 1:8 are the called in 1 Cor 1:26 and 1 Thess 5:24.

Thank you for these uplifting and encouraging words!

Thank you for the One Year Bible too. I can’t wait to get it!:)

Hello Laurie, this weeks devotion was very encouraging!
    1. I have been so very thankful for the Helper’s guidance. I have been very sensitive to the direction I am supposed to go in. Over the last year I have had a struggle with someone I have been serving with. The Lord has helped me along by convicting me and encouraged me to work through it.
    2. I really need to pray more. Also to ask in His name. To be persistent, I guess I take for granted He knows our desires before we ask…
    3. I’m so thankful for the power of the Holy Spirit. I accepted Christ as my Savior in 2010 and was asked to lead a ministry a year later. I have also been asked to speak on a few occasions at church which it something I so very much dislike doing. I know I would not have been able to do any of those things without the help of the Holy Spirit.

By studying the Word and growing spiritually it has been so exciting and I’m still in awe.

I have loved reading all of your comments throughout this study, Stephanie, but I was especially encouraged to discover that you became a Christian in 2010. It is also obvious that you, dear sister, are a disciple. Thank you for sharing your heart with our online group. You have encouraged and inspired me more than you know.

Thanks so much for sharing Stephanie! I had a similar experience with speaking in front of people. When I was in high school I was serving in my Church’s Awana program and I asked the Bible lesson teacher at that time to teach a specific lesson. Well, instead of teaching it she told me that I could teach it. I would have to say that I was terrified to talk to K-6th graders. However, that little push was just what the Lord used to show me that I could talk in front of people and that teaching Bible lessons was something that I actually enjoyed. Now I am the one teaching the Bible lessons for Awana. However, to this day as I go to speak in front of kids, teens, and adults I will sometimes still get nervous but I just quote Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” He has never let me down and always gives me the correct words to say! Thanks for taking the time to read my story and thanks for allowing the Lord to use you in such an awesome way.

When I listen to the Holy Spirit….I am urged into action that I feel is pleasing to God. This week I have been prompted to pray and pray deeply! I am sure because of this chapter on prayer but what a blessing to be told now is the time to talk to God!
I agree with Stephanie that I need to be persistent with my prayers. Writing and or speaking aloud my pressing prayers help me to really concentrate and bring them to the Lord rather then assuming God knows.
I have moved some 15 times in my life….that is my bully. It was my excuse for not getting involved too deeply and/or needing time to adjust. It has also been sorrowful because I have had to leave ministries and people that I have loved. God has shown me…life is only worth living deeply and with purpose. I move faster (at the Holy Spirits leading) to build relationships and find some purpose in my new community. I no longer wait but move to glorify God, I no longer resent God for the moves but thank Him for so many opportunities to meet amazing people and do new things in this life.

    1) I have experienced the Holy Spirit recently when I was talking to a young lady from a Christian Ranch that I serve at and as she was sharing I wasn’t completely sure what I was going to say in response. As I was listening I just said a little prayer asking the Lord for guidance and He gave me what I needed to say. I would have to say that these are the moments that I love because it is a true example of how God can use us even when we feel like we can’t be used.

    2) The most significant thing I learned was how much I need to pray more. Laurie, I loved the “And God Prayer”. You gave such a clear example of something that I strive to do every day. The verse 1 Thess. 5:17 is one that I often see young people have a hard time understanding and I am so excited to have a new way of explaining it to the youth that I teach at our Church’s Awana program.

    1. This past week I spent time with ten girls that I call Gods Girls, a gathering I started in June. They range from 8 years old to 17. We meet for dinner and a craft time of making prayer journals. I am trying to teach them about spiritual things every time we meet! We are staring Beauty By the Book for Teens in January for the middle school and up girls! When I was meeting with them last Friday I showed them a video of a guy telling them they are loved by God, it is called I AM AWESOME. After the short video the girls started asking all kinds of questions and for 45 minutes we talked about God and His Word and how He is all we need! I could not have planned that! It was totally the Holy Spirit leading the meeting and opening their hearts! My sisterchick who was helping me was just as amazed at God working as me! Exciting!
This past week God asked me to encourage a younger woman in our church to make amends with some others that she had said some wrong things to. I prayed so much before meeting with her and God was so good! He worked it all out and she was very glad to go to the other people and apologize!

    2. God inclines His ear to listen when I pray! Ps 116:1-2 I love that verse! God is teaching me so much about prayer! After seeing the War Room I ordered Priscilla’s book called Fervent and I have made some changes in my prayer life that have been so exciting for me. This Sunday I am going to a prayer seminar that Paul Miller who wrote A Praying Life is teaching.

    3. My struggle in my “call” from Jesus was always that I was so young (NOT NOW) but 40 years ago I was! And God showed me early on just like Timothy don’t let anyone look down on your youth. I was only 26 when I became a senior pastors wife and I really struggled that I didn’t know enough, wasn’t smart enough, was to young. I want to be controlled and empowered by the Holy Spirit like Acts 1:8, no matter how young or how old I am!
