A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear

Ebola. The first U.S. patient was officially diagnosed this week with the viral predator Ebola and fear is the most popular response – even in Christian circles. It’s all over the news and likely on your mind too. You are thinking of where you will run to when the big outbreak happens – IF it does happen and how you can stockpile enough food for your family to eat while you hide away in your cabin in the woods.

Do you know what else runs away when it’s afraid? Sheep. Funny how the bible is full of sheep analogies, isn’t it?

Sheep have a deep deep desire to stay close together. And when the big bad wolf comes lurking into a pasture the sheep flee- together.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - Sheep running away

They don’t have a secret hide out or shelter to hole themselves up in; they simply follow the first sheep that started running. And he doesn’t really have a plan either. He runs and they follow. Remind you of anything? Who do you follow when you are afraid? The news? The CDC?

“All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned, each of us, to his own way…” Isaiah 53:6

Not only are we following these lost sheep, but other scared sheep are following us. Like your children. You know they see you watch the news coverage all day. They hear you talking on the phone to your mother venting your fears for the future. These little ears, more than anyone else, need to know it’s going to be OK. YOU need to know that it’s going to be OK.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - Ewe and lamb

Sheep are not dumb. They may be skittish and quick to run, but they can do one really good thing. They can befriend a shepherd. A good shepherd feeds his flock with hands full of grain. He nourishes them and gently cares for them with no expectations until the sheep begin to recognize his form.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - Shepherd

When the shepherd appears in the field and walks towards his favorite sheep,( the one whose wet nose pushed deep into his palm full of oats the week before) the sheep meets his gaze and draws near. And a beautiful thing happens when the other sheep see the trust they share. They feel the safety and follow the confident sheep to its master. God created sheep with an instinct to be led. YOU were created to be led too.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - Psalm 23:1

So, I’ll ask it again.

Who are you following today in this broken world?

Is it the fearful thing the flock is running from or is it the Good Shepherd? Did you turn away when he came to meet you in the pasture? Did you follow your peers down that road to nowhere? Did your children see the fear in your eyes?

Turn back lost sheep.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - One sheep turning

We may be prone to wander, but the Good Shepherd never turns away his own. He is waiting for you, arms full of peace and love. Fear and death can hold no power over you when the Lord is the one shepherding you. You are fed from the very hand of God and can truly say “I lack nothing.”

It is a choice.

A counter-cultural crazy choice to give up the fear of life’s great enemy – death. When fear no longer paralyzes us, we are free to love and give in astounding ways.

A Christian Response to Ebola and Fear - Give!

Like the family of missionaries serving in the Middle East, spreading the gospel on the streets to Muslims. Or the family that adopted two children even though they already had four mouths to feed. What about the folks who give up their weekend to hug and give food to the homeless people downtown who haven’t bathed in a month?

We don’t have time to knot our fists in fear. We have more important things to do. There are people who need you to open up your palms and be the hands and feet of Jesus today.

The Lord keeps bringing me his encouragement, peace and strength through devotions and meditations from his Word… and through people like you! Thank you for sharing his Word with us and to remind me WHO I follow!
Philippians 4:8 “And now dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
‘Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God and trust also in me.”…John 14:1

    Laurie,

Thank you for the truth about how we react to ebola with fear!!! Shame on the media for taking advantage of people who do not think wisely when fear sets in with the possibility of a virus spreading and killing too many people. God,s Word keeps me from letting the media, etc. dictate what I should think!!!

Fear is one of the devil’s best tactics. I feel like when I let fear creep in to my life that I am allowing Satan to rule me. And ain’t nobody got time for that!! I want the light of the world to rule my life! I often turn to various scriptures about trusting in the Lord and I will put them all over my house as a reminder. Nothing good comes from fear!!

I agree Stephanie! Nothing good comes from fear. There is a reason why the phrase “fear not” is used over and over again in scripture.

Thanks Stephanie, I think I’m going to do a word study on fear today with my kiddos, so we can ‘listen to our Shepherd’s voice’. John 10 Time to revisit Is 46:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid for I am your God. I will strengthen you, and uphold you with my righteous right hand,…Remembering how our Good Shepherd has already led us through the valley of the shadow with our premie who wasn’t supposed to come home but is a healthy 18 year old, our Ed’s heart attack, and subsequent ulcer where he nearly bled to death, but God answered the cries of our heart and helped us’ can help us now through this one as well. “HE maketh me to lie down in green pastures, HE leads me beside still waters…HE restores my soul…It really is all about Him. He…He…He…which voice will I listen to? Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord FOREVER. Now there is a safe place to dwell! Meanwhile, until that time, we can hide under the shelter of His wings. Ps 91 The Name of the Lord IS a strong tower, the righteous RUN into it and are SAFE. Prv 18:10 May the Lord bless you and keep you and your loved ones…

Psalm 27:1 of whom shall I fear or of what shall I be afraid…….is the essence of

    Psalms 27:1-4 | NASB
The Lord is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; Whom shall I dread?2 When evildoers came upon me to devour my flesh, My adversaries and my enemies, they stumbled and fell.3 Though a host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In spite of this I shall be confident.4 One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
