DIS Online Study Week 1 Template Final

Welcome to Week 1 of our Are You a Disciple? online study! Thanks to all of you who are doing this 7-week study with me and XXXs to those of you who left comments on last week’s post (you blessed my heart).

As promised, one of you who posted a comment last week will win a $100 shopping spree on Priority’s online store. And the winner is: Stephanie from Pleasanton, CA! Congratulations, Stephanie! Please check your inbox today to claim your prize.

New Drawing Next Tuesday:

If I was on a desert island and could only have one possession with me, without a doubt it would be my all-time favorite quiet time tool: the One Year Bible™.

One Year Bible

My One Year Bible™ and I have a very longstanding and intimate relationship — we’ve been through many seasons, highs, lows, and everything in between together. But it never ceases to amaze me how each day’s passage speaks perfectly to a specific need in my life.

Next Tuesday, YOU could win your own awesomely wonderful One Year Bible™. Enter to win by posting a comment to one or more of the discussion questions (below) by midnight, Monday, Oct. 12. The winner will be announced Tuesday, Oct. 13. And remember, if you post a comment every week, you’ll be entered in our Are You a Disciple? Grand Prize Perfect Attendance drawing.

It’s Not Too Late To Join:

This past week, you completed your Week 1 homework. But even if you haven’t done that yet, and even if you still don’t have your Are You a Disciple? workbook, that’s totally okay. You can still join our online study group. Just download the Week 1 homework now, complete it as you can, and be sure to order your workbook or workbook/video bundle asap to continue the study with me and our online group.

I Have a Confession To Make:

Before we begin discussing our Week 1 homework together via the comments (below), I have a confession to make:

Until now, I have never actually “done” one of my own Bible studies. And by “done” I mean opening an actual workbook, picking up a pen, and filling in the answers to each question in the homework. So, as I was doing that this past week, it felt a little weird. But then . . . it felt wonderful.

Wonderful to process God’s Word on paper.

Wonderful to place each question before the Him and ask for His wisdom.

Wonderful to experience the presence of His Spirit as my personal teacher.

Wonderful to be convicted, corrected, comforted, and counseled by His living, active, and inspired Word (2 Tim. 3:16-17, Heb. 4:12).

You see, when I’m writing a Bible study, I “do” the study but in a very different way. I begin by studying, discovering truths, and taking notes about what I’ve learned. Next, I process and organize what I’ve learned. Finally, I begin writing and formulating questions to help others (like you) study God’s Word so that you can experience the wonder of:

Processing God’s Word on paper.

Placing each question before Him and asking for His wisdom.

Experiencing the presence of His Spirit as your personal teacher.

Be convicted, corrected, comforted, and counseled by His living, active, and inspired Word.

How I pray that is exactly what you experienced this week as you studied God’s Word!

Dear sister, I am praying for you. I am asking God to help you become a disciple – and specifically, that you will become a modern-day Priscilla (Acts 18-19). If you watched the Are You a Disciple? introductory video, you’ve already met Priscilla. Isn’t she amazing?! Didn’t you just fall in love with her?! Priscilla is truly the woman God wants all of us to become. And that will be at the very top of my prayer list for all of you for the next six weeks. Lord, please raise up a new generation of Priscillas!

If you didn’t order the videos, you can watch the introductory video free and meet Priscilla for yourself. As you watch, you will also want to fill in the listening guide on page 1 of your workbook.

Discussion Info:

It’s time now to discuss what we studied in our Week 1 homework. Here’s how our online discussion will work:

  • Post your comment to one or more of the discussion questions below.
  • Read and reply to comments other group members post as the Lord leads you. Let’s encourage one another, girls! Practice being a Priscilla.

Week 1 Discussion Questions:

Question 1: As you studied Jesus’ back story (Day 1, ques. 1-3), what did you learn that makes Jesus and Christianity unique from every other religion?

Question 2:  Share something new that you learned from your study of John the Baptist and the back stories of the disciples. (Days 2-3)

Question 3:  Let’s get a little personal. Describe one of the most significant ways Jesus has proven to you that He is “the way, the truth, and the life,” (John 14:6) (Day 3, ques. 8).

Our Assignment This Week:

  1. If you ordered the Are You a Disciple? downloadable videos, watch the Week 1 video and fill in the listening guide on p. 27 in your workbook. If you didn’t purchase the videos, but you’d like to watch this week’s video, click here.
  2. Complete the Week 2 homework which we will discuss next week.
  3. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, check your email for my Week 2 online study post AND the announcement of the winner of the fabulous and life-changing One Year Bible™.

It’s time to talk about what the Lord has taught us through His Word this week! Please post your comments below to one or more of the Week 1 Discussion Questions. I’m hoping to hear from ALL of you who commented last week and from you NEWBIES who are joining us this week. Thank you so much for studying God’s wonderful Word with me. Go, Priscillas!

Your sister in Christ,

LaurieSig

Hi Laurie! First of all I have to say that I just finished up week one today, starting with the 2nd half of day 3 through day 5. So anyone else out there who wasn’t able to finish week one on the given days is not alone. 🙂 I probably would not have finished it all had I not planted myself in front of my computer and stayed there until I was done. But it was definitely worth it!

I learned so many new truths from this study, but one thing I noticed about John the Baptist is his humility. He says “I’m ONLY a voice. I’m nothing compared to Jesus.” He was always exalting Jesus. The focus was never on himself because he knew who he was and He knew who Jesus was!

      Rose,
I love what you said about John exalting Jesus! Oh how I need to learn that it’s at the feet of Jesus where we learn!

What an amazing awesome God He is! This study has been a complete whirlwind and I love it! I loved learning how John ties it back spiritually from John 1:1 to Genesis 1:1, 26. That was so amazing to see God, the Holy Spirit and Jesus all at work. He is the author and founder of our world. What draws me to Him is just how much He loves us. I never really knew what Love meant until I became a follower of Jesus Christ. I can’t even begin to process it in my little meager brain.

What stuck out to me about John the Baptist was how radical he was. He was called and taught by God, and his purpose was not to convert the world but to TELL the world about Jesus Christ. My favorite thing I learned was regarding Jesus’ first 2 disciples. (John 1:35-37) how they STOOD (which means learning or questioning), then they were LOOKING(studying) at Jesus, and they heard Jesus speak and they FOLLOWED. That was a huge moment for me because with such boldness and faith, they knew he was the Messiah.

I loved learning about the back stories of the disciples. I think for me it was encouraging because they were uneducated hard workers of society and Jesus chose them to be his disciples. Often times I look at myself as just a stay at home mom, uneducated and wondering how can Jesus use me in His great plan. So it was very encouraging t o read about them. And know the back stories of them.

Jesus is my Lord and Savior he has shown me numerous times how I am His. He has protected me, forgiven me, and has given me a new life. By doing this study I know I will gain the confidence and faithfully know He will equip me to be a disciple that we are all called to do.
Looking forward to this study, God Bless you sisters!

Stephanie, I loved how you described John the Baptist in that whole paragraph. You have brought new light to that whole passage. I’ve not looked at it like that. Thank you for your view.

    1) God created everything thru Jesus-everything! Christianity is God ordained and from John 1:9 this light is for everyone!

2)I loved realizing how smart the disciples had to be….they had been prepared to meet the Messiah-they knew what scripture said and when they meet Him they were able to follow.

3)Jesus has given me peace in circumstances that should have caused stress, worry and hardship. He has replaced fear with strength (God’s strength). He has blessed my life, my marriage, my family when I did not deserve such abundance.

    1. It’s all about Jesus from the beginning to the end! Because Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness, the darkness can NEVER win! Hallelujah! He is the true light. He is GOD, that is what makes Christianity different from any other religions.
    3. This is part of what Jeus has taught me about being a desciple. This is a except from my testimony written a few months ago. I have been taking care of my mother the last eight years, she had her rights to me take away when I was around 12 years old. I am now 62 she is 97. I never saw her much in the 45 years before I took her in next door to me.
I will tell you that when you have been through something like this, abuse,
abandonment, you can’t explain the turmoil, the hurt, the tragedy of it all, but
you CAN experience the healing power and presence of the Lord. He goes
through the pain with you and allows you to once again, experience the
forgiveness He has to offer each one of us.
It’s all about Him, and who He is, and what He wants to do with the
innermost parts of our soul that no one else knows about but Him. He was
there all along with me and continues to be.

I praise HIM for He has continued healing in my heart. It’s very hard, but
    necessary.
I learned to walk next door with Jesus holding my hand, side by side with
me! Never letting go of me!

One of my life verses was used again again and again in my life!

(Phil. 4:13) For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me
    strength

The ground at the cross is level, no one is higher than anyone else! Jesus accepted us all and loves each one of us the same!

Jesus died for Christie-Justification for both. Me and my Mother. She has yet to accept Him, yet He has taught me how to forgive in the only way possible, through His forgiveness to me!

Hope this wasn’t to personal! 😉

1)God has been here from the beginning and will always be. He is the creator and light of the world!

2)My favorite part about John the Baptist was that I could see how much he believed in Jesus. You could just tell by the words that he shared that his belief in the Lord was real to him. As I read about John the Baptist and the other disciples I could just tell how they truly wanted to follow Jesus. They certainly made me think about my own life and if I drop everything to follow the Lord when He calls.

3)The Lord has always been my shepherd. Through all the different areas of my life I have seen the Lord give me the peace and guidance that I need for every situation. My favorite verses are Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him,And He shall direct your paths.” They are a great reminder to me that God is in control and following Him is the greatest path I can take in life.

I haven’t been able to get into this study as much as I’d like. We’re in the middle of harvest, so my hubby is keeping me very busy!! We hope to be done this week so then I can buckle down.

    3. Jesus has proven to me over & over again, that He is My Lord & Shepherd. He is always by my side. He was there when my dad had colon cancer. He brought my dad out of that ordeal, not having to have chemo or radiation. He gave me such peace & comfort during that time, I was amazed at how calm I was. God is so good, all the time!!

I hear you Peg, harvest is so busy and long, long days, its difficult to carve out a block of time to study. I’ve just began week one and hope to finish it and start catching up.
I grew up in a Christian home and sometimes become complaisant about it, but so far this has been refreshing and renewing. God is at work and I’m excited to see where it’s going to take me.
