The Best of Back to School

Was this you a few days ago when your kids went back to school?

Mom with four kids celebrates back to school

What’s not to be excited about? The kids going back to school means the grocery stores are practically abandoned during the day, the beach is empty (not that I would go there mid-day, by myself, while my kids are at school playing on the pebbly shores of the playground. Or would I?) and that mysterious sound called “quiet” has somehow made it’s return.

The onset of the scheduled days has me both relieved and exhausted. It’s a double edged sword. You don’t have to listen to “I’m bored” like you did fifty thousand times this summer, but you do have to get up at what seems like 3 am so you can police activities like teeth brushing and oatmeal eating and matching sock wearing all while trying to peel your eyelids open.

So in honor of this joyous season us moms are in I’ve rounded up some of the best back to school posts. I even found a few good homeschool freebies. Enjoy!

School is beginning again, and yes, it is a an exciting time! If you will permit a mother’s musings… This past week we sent two daughters off to college. Two precious daughters that we had the privilege of training from kindergarten through to high school at home. There they were taught from the Scriptures each day, not once did they hear about Darwin, Jungian psychology, Freud’s perversions, or that God was dead. They had no kindergarten teachers take them to their “wedding”, nor did they have school shootings, or drugs offered from age 9 and up. That was exciting, and as a Mama to know that their Daddy and I had trained them in the nurture and admonition of the Lord gives a great satisfaction. As my Papa taught me, “hard work pays off”. Thanks Dad, for your sacrifice to send us to a school where we were taught Creation from first grade on. It’s
true that those early years are soooooooooooo impressionable. It’s a gift and an honor to follow in those footsteps and leave that legacy to our children. There are few things that grieve my heart more than to hear of parents rejoicing to put their kids on the little yellow bus. I can’t help but wonder if they ever asked God if that was okay with Him. We wanted our children to be blessed, and we knew the Scriptures said, Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly,… but who meditates on the law night and day…whatever he does shall prosper…ps1. this tribute wouldn’t be possible without the former school teachers who showed me what was taught in the public schools and that was 20 years ago, it’s far worse today. I am grateful they had the courage to speak the truth in love, or in my naivety I would have sent me sweet ones off to that little yellow bus too. Today we took a minute or 30 🙂 after breakfast to watch the Mama and three baby raccoons that our kitten had treed, great pictures, great time with the kids still at home, and a prayer of thanks to the God who opened the doors for us to disciple our children to love the Lord their God with all their hearts, souls, mind and strength. I think one of the added bonus’ has been to watch them become best friends. For that I thank Pam Forester and her ‘brother offended checklist’ where I learned to be Judge Judy while the children approached the bench, and learned how to work through their struggles in the power of the Holy Spirit according to God’s Word. Priceless! I remember one of the early lessons on gratitude God taught me when I was in the thick of diapers, and babies, and homeschooling in an 800 sq foot home. He reminded me of my days in Korea where all the families lived in 20 by 20 sq foot rooms with up to 8 people, no phone, no water, no stove, no washing machine/dryer!!!, with one piece of furniture in it, and my attitude was properly admonished. My excuses like Moses, were not acceptable to God. In retrospect, I’d do it if I had to live in a tent now, to keep our kids from the propaganda twisting young minds, and being foisted as knowledge in schools today. For any wondering, try this experiment…check their attitudes after a few months, are they more respectful and honoring to their parents, siblings, more helpful around the house, more well mannered, less arguing, fighting, bickering? Or is there an increase in selfishness, moodiness, worldliness? Could it be that it takes ‘as they wake up, walk along the way, lie down to teach them the ways of the Lord, dare I say a ‘greenhouse’ to train the young saplings into oaks of righteousness? And if you are thinking I can’t do it… you are 100% right, but God can through you. Patience is a fruit of the Spirit, not an intrinsic part of our lower nature. Therefore it’s available to His kids, 24/7. It will cause you to lean on the everlasting arms more than you ever dreamed, but is that such a bad thing?

Thank you so much for your comment Debra! The homeschool/private school/public school topic is certainly a hot one. Because I do not find it to be a salvation issue, I think it would be best if we avoid debating it on this blog. We are here to encourage all women regardless of how they choose to school their children.
