Live From Little Rock: Are You a Disciple Week 2 Study

DIS Online Study Week 2 Template

It’s Monday, 10:30 p.m., and I’m writing this post from my hotel room in Little Rock, Arkansas — a place I don’t know very well yet. But I will.

One hour ago, Bill and I said good-bye to our son, David, our daughter-in-love, Stephanie, and our three grandchildren, Ezra, Juliette, and Caroline. From 9:30-10:30, Bill and I cried because when we drive home to Houston tomorrow morning, they will remain in Little Rock, Arkansas, where David started a wonderful new job today.

But even as I write this post all puffy-eyed and red-nosed…

And even as I realize the days of having my grandchildren and their parents living close by may be over…

I am so proud of their decision to follow the Lord to Little Rock. Because as you saw in your homework this week, that’s what disciples do. They follow Jesus. Wherever He leads. No matter the cost.

As for Bill and me, we will follow Jesus back to Houston — the place where He led us away from our own parents and children’s grandparents over 27 years ago. However…

I do foresee many trips to Little Rock in our future.

Week 2 Discussion Questions:

Question 1:  How did you define what a disciple is (p. 31, ques. 1d)?

Question 2:  As you studied the blessings and benefits of being a disciple( p. 40-42), what blessed you the most and why?

Question 3:  What did the Lord teach you this week that challenged you the most regarding your relationship with Him?

Our Assignment This Week:

  1. If you ordered the Are You a Disciple? downloadable videos, watch the Week 2 video and fill in the listening guide on p. 55 in your workbook. If you didn’t purchase the videos but you’d like to watch this week’s video, click here.
  2. Complete the Week 3 homework which we will discuss next week.
  3. On Tuesday, Oct. 20, check your email for my Week 3 online study post and the announcement of the winner of our iDisciple Bundle.

I’m so looking forward to hearing from you this week, sisters! Please forgive me for not participating in the discussion in last week’s comments (I was preparing for a retreat, teaching at the retreat, followed immediately by heading to Little Rock to help with the move). I will be very active in the discussion this week.

As I conclude this post, precious sisters, how I pray that we will follow the example of Peter, Andrew, James and John.

“And [Jesus] said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men…And they immediately followed Him.”  Matthew 4:18-22 NAS

Your sister,

LaurieSig

    1. Becoming a disciple of Jesus means that I will be a student to the teachings of Jesus Christ and be obedient to faithfully apply it to my life and to others around me.
    2. John 10:27-29, God knows us individually and intimately, and that He cares for us. Not even Satan can snatch us away from Him, when we are His.
    3. I was most challenged by offering up forgiveness. I hold onto a lot of resentment towards my mom. Just taking that to the Lord so He can take off that burden. Loved reading about Peter how Jesus knew his heart. Even after Peter denied Christ 3 times, Jesus still redeemed Peter. I’m so amazed at the awesomeness of God how all the intricate details of our life are already planned out and especially if you are a blessed child of God how He does care for you and loves you dearly.
    Love this study Laurie!

Stephanie, I am so grateful that you love the study. But even more than that, I am SO grateful for the way the Lord is speaking to you through His Word and for your willingness to share it so honestly with all of us. You are a blessing! Love to you, dear sister.

Stephanie, I agree that forgiveness is a difficult thing. What helps me to forgive is to get saturated in the things of God by looking up and finding all that is ours in Christ. It makes the things that others have done to us pale in comparison to all that Jesus offers to give us each and every day. It sounds like that’s what you’re doing too by the things you said about God in your comment!

    1. Becoming a disciple of Jesus means that I will learn from him by reading His word and applying it to my life for the purpose of obeying and teaching what I have learned.
    2. God has been showing me that being a follower of Jesus is a daily cross bearing task. I need to armor up through His word and choose daily to follow Him. As a result, I am responding to Him by letting go and putting all of myself at the cross and following Him daily. Without Him I can do nothing, but with Him I can catch people for His Kingdom helping them to leave their sins at the cross and follow Jesus.
And Laurie, thanks for the win this week! Looking forward to recieving it!

Following the Lord is a daily task of taking up our cross and relying on Him through every situation. Thanks for sharing Christie!

    1. Becoming a disciple of Jesus means I will follow Christ’s teachings with words, in actions and in thought. I will strive for obedience to God’s will. When others see me or know me they see Christ’s light shining thru.

    2. I love the benefit package that comes along with being a disciple! Today, I am claiming John 14:13-14 Whatever we ask in Christ’s name will be done so the Son can bring glory to the Father. Two of my young adult kids are finding their way in the world the long way, the harder way….I trust this promise over their lives.

    3. I found myself tearing up reading about Peter. I have read his story many times before but how his heart must have ached to disappoint Jesus! I know as I walk closer to Jesus I feel more convicted faster over my transgressions. But to know we follow a God that forgives and loves is simply awesome!!

    1) Becoming a disciple of Jesus means that I will commit to learning more about Him and His teaching and applying it to my own life. Then continue to share what I have learned with those that around me.
2)John 15:11 I loved being reminded that God’s Joy will be in me.In a Bible study I am leading we are talking about having Joy through trials and I just loved this verse and how it shared that when we follow the Lord His joy will be in us and that is the best joy we can ever have!

Krystal, it’s interesting that John the Baptist also is telling his disciples that he is full of joy because of the bridegroom’s voice. The bridegroom, of course, is Jesus. He then goes on to say that his joy is complete . . . he’s satisfied in exalting Jesus!

I love what you said about joy through trials too. It’s so hard to count it all joy when we are in the middle of a trial. Reminds me of Neh 8:10, “. . . the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Oh how we need joy and strength during our trials.

The verse I’m referring to about John the Baptist is John 3:29.
