What My 7-year-old Granddaughter Taught Me About Discipleship – Online Study Week 5

DIS Online Study Week 5 Template Final

Today’s online study post is later than usual, but The Cole House is overflowing with the most wonderful three grandchildren this week, and catching up with them has been my priority. As most of you know, they (and their parents) moved to Little Rock a few weeks ago. This is their first visit back, and it’s been crazy fun.

Resized

As you can see, I literally have my hands full, and I couldn’t be happier.

I also want to thank their their amazing mom and my beloved daughter-in-love, Stephanie, for hijacking my post on Wednesday and letting you know why my usual online study post was delayed. And to all of you boys-only-no-daughters moms, daughters-in-law are so worth the wait.

Stephanie and I have had some great conversations this week. In one of them, she told me about a recent incident she’d had with the kids in the grocery store. An elderly woman was shopping close by them when she dropped several of her items. Before Stephanie knew it, seven-year-old Juliette (far right in the picture above) sprang into action and began picking up the items and handing them to the older woman who was most grateful.

Juliette’s quick response surprised Stephanie because Juliette is usually shy around strangers. But when Stephanie asked, “Juliette, what made you go help that woman so quickly?” Juliette immediately replied, “When I saw the lady drop those things, I remembered what I learned in my Sunday school class last week. Jesus wants us to be servants and help others. So, I did.”

Simple obedience. It’s what following Jesus and becoming a disciple is all about. So why do we make it so complicated?

Our own feelings of inadequacy often complicate our obedience to Christ (see Rose’s comments from last week). Fear and anxiety do, too (see Krystal’s comments as well). Challenging circumstances — like moving 15 times in your life as Audrey who commented last week has — can also sabotage the simplicity of following Jesus.

Each of those women, however, confirmed in their comments that simple obedience led them closer to Christ and enabled them to become stronger disciples.

This week, God used a seven-year-old girl to teach this fifty-seven-year-old woman about discipleship. It reminds me of a lesson Jesus taught to His own disciples:

“At that time, the disciples came to Jesus, saying, ‘Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, and said, ‘Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you shall not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever then humbles himself as this child he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.'”  Matthew 18:1-4 NASB

Precious sisters, discipleship isn’t complicated. It requires childlike faith and childlike obedience. Thank You, Jesus.

And thank you, sweet Juliette.

When you are ready to discuss what you studied in your Week 5 homework, here’s how the online discussion works:

  • Just post your comment to one or more of the discussion questions below.
  • Read and reply to comments other group members post as the Lord leads you. Y’all have been awesome about this, so keep up the good work.

Week 5 Discussion Questions:

Question 1:   How has serving the Lord while experiencing the power and fruit of the Holy Spirit worked for you? What was that like? How did it feel? And what were the results? (Day 2, Question 5b)

Question 2:  In what specific way is Jesus, the Vine, nourishing you through His Word? And in what way are you, the branch, flourishing and bearing fruit? (Day 2, Question 7)

Question 3: In the first two days of your homework, you studied John 15:1-8 and the principles of abiding and producing spiritual fruit. But in Day 4, you studied John 15:9-17 and the topic of love. As you studied the entire passage (John 15:1-17), what new insights did you learn about love and how to love like Jesus? (Day 4, Question 6)

Our Assignment This Week:

  1. If you ordered the Are You a Disciple? downloadable videos, watch the Week 5 video and fill in the listening guide on p. 125 in your workbook. If you didn’t purchase the videos, but you’d like to watch this week’s video, click here.
  2. Complete the Week 6 homework which we will discuss next week.
  3. Watch your email next week for my Week 6 online study post AND the announcement of the One Year Bible winner.

I love y’all, but I gotta get back to my grandkids! See you next week, and I’ll be watching for your Week 5 discussion question comments.

Your sister in Christ,

LaurieSig

    Good Morning Laurie!
I stumbled upon your website by accident while searching how to become a wise woman. I immediately wrote down the 7 ways to become a wise woman on 3 x5 notecards to be able to read the Proverbs verses you had suggested. I am a 61 yr old woman who is struggling and need all the help I can get with my walk to be a great daughter to our Lord. I have many health issues that complicate my walk. In the past 5 years I have had 5 back surgeries which included fusions and the insertion of a spinal cord stimulator for my lower back. I am now having problems with my upper spine and may need surgery on it. To top that off, when the doctor did a ct scan on my neck to see why my right arm was numb, weak and in a lot of pain, they found a tumor on my thyroid. I also suffer from fibromyalgia and depression and chronic pain. Daily I pray to God to show me what I am to do with all this. I believe that to have this many things going on, there must be a reason, maybe He wants me to use it all to help others. I am very confused about it. I am a Christian, but do not attend church. I became very disillusioned by the Baptist church I was a member of because of the cliques and prejudice against hispanics. I am not Hispanic, but my husband is from Guatemala. I am white. So my walk with the Lord is without a church. Anyway my real purpose of writing you is to thank you for being where I needed you to be when I needed something. You are a blessing to many. I so wanted to go on your How to renew your faith cruise, but my husband is unable to go.
I will continue to read your website, as I can see how it will enrich my life.
Thank you and I send many blessings your way!

Laurie, your story about your granddaughter is similar to what my 10 year old granddaughter, Makayla did this week. She’s been using her Awana bucks to buy bibles, not toys, etc. She wants to give them to people she meets and tell them about Jesus. She had the opportunity once this week and I was so proud of her. For Christmas she said she really didn’t need anything but when I pressed her she said maybe some complete bibles as the ones she had were mostly psalm, proverbs, and new testament. God has a hand on her sweet heart.

2 & 3. These lessons are so convicting to me it almost makes me want to cry. The ministry I’m serving in has been a struggle the past year and a half! I finally feel at peace because I’ve tried reconciling a relationship that has been through the wringer and finally accepted that I can’t do her part of the reconciling. She needs to do that on her own. Then when the study came to love and the different types of love 1 Corinthians talks about…yikes the Lord was giving me a good spanking. My struggle is why is it so hard to have unconditional love for one another?!? We are all brothers and sisters in Christ but sin can do so much damage. I know the answer to my own question just “typing/talking” out loud here. What really struck me over the head is the agape love Jesus is commanding of the disciples and of us. If Jesus commanded it, then it’s going to be tough sometimes but we need to abide. Thank you for reading through my babble of a post but I am truly grateful and thankful for this study. The Lord has put so many things in place right now in my life according to studies anyway, it is a praise! Blessing sisters

What a sweet story about Juliette! A great reminder to obey God and humble ourselves like little children, even if we’re shy. 🙂

It’s easy to love those we deem lovable. But Jesus wants His disciples to love so differently, the world cannot help but notice. But none of this love is even possible, except through the power we experience as we abide in Him (John 15:4 & 13:35).

It’s amazing how the love of Christ changes everything. I recall times I was called upon to love a person who was not acting very lovable. It wasn’t easy and I wanted to be just as unlovable back. But I chose to love them instead and the love that flowed from Christ through me to them, made them lovable right back to me!

Question 1) Serving the Lord while experiencing the power and fruit of the Holy Spirit is an amazing thing. When I am fully trusting on the Lord’s strength in every situation I feel accomplished and full of joy. I also notice that the results in situations always turn out way better when I rely on Him.

First of all thank you Laurie so much for the $50.00 shopping spree to your online I am serving a store! And thank you for this study!!!
1)Serving the Lord and experiencing the Holy Spirit makes me feel full, satisfied, complete….but in a humbled way because I know it was not my own strength!
2)His word strengthens me and directs me, reminds me how to love others and pray. I work as a volunteer in a class in Puerto Rico…when my work is finished I sometimes walk over to my phone to take a break but often I am prompted to sit a pray for these children, teachers, and school. That is the Holy Spirit working thru me!
    3)Lay down our life for others…..do I, will I, can I love this much…I pray so…

    Hello girlfriends,
1.When I am living in the Spirit and walking in His love for me so I can show it to others, things are great and I am filled with JOY, but when I miss the mark and walk in the flesh, it is NOT GOOD. I want to daily choose to say yes to Jesus and walk as His disciple. I want to love like He loves but my flesh gets in the way! So I have learned before I even get out of bed, to say out loud “I’m desperate for YOU, help me today!”Then through out the day I have to choose many times when things don’t go ‘my way’ to walk in His way! It’s a journey filled with bumps and bruises caused my not abiding in the Vine.
When I do abide in Him, the joy that is set before me, I can do anything!
    2. I can only get nourished through His word by reading it, listening to it and applying it to my life. When I read His Word He speaks to me, convicts me, rewards me, and fills me up with Himself. I only flourish when I obey His word. Obedience brings blessings. Disobedience brings discipline.
    3. When I abide in the Vine, I will learn what it takes to lay down my life for my friends, not there yet! But learning. It’s easier to lay down your life for someone you love even when they hurt you! But to love when you are not loved, only Jesus can do help me do that! And He has! Many times over with my mother who is now 97. I was taken away from her when I was a young girl because of extreme abuse. Now in her later years she has needed me to take care of her. She is still very mean, unforgiving, cruel and not thankful. She does not know Jesus. But God has taught me how to love like He does by me abiding in Him daily, moment by moment some days! When I ask Jesus for help, HE GIVES it to me! Miracle! I think when we truly look at the cross with our own sins there that Jesus died for, we can see and live more clearly that we are ALL forgiven and we ALL need Jesus. The cross is for all of us! But being His disciple is a cross bearing daily abiding clinging to Jesus to help us and taking His power that He freely gives us and that way it is not a burden it is a blessing.
