What Does Jesus Believe About The Bible? Online Study Week 3

DIS Online Study Week 3 Template

Three pages in the Are You a Disciple? workbook are filled with the names of the 400+ women who piloted the study with me last fall at my church. Each week those wonderful women:

  • Completed the Bible study homework
  • Participated in small group discussion classes
  • Attended my weekly teaching sessions, and
  • Filled out evaluation forms that enabled me to improve the study for you.

Needless to say, I LOVE those women!

Some of the most encouraging feedback I received during the pilot was in response to the Week 3 teaching session when I taught What Does Jesus Believe About The Bible?  So today, because I am so grateful that you are joining me for this online study, I’m posting that entire video message for you (if you purchased the video downloads, you already have it). If you’d like to take notes as you watch, the listening guide is on page 79 of your Are You a Disciple? workbook.

In today’s culture, many people believe the Bible is just another good book. Others dismiss it as irrelevant and unscientific. But as disciples of Jesus Christ, you and I are commanded to “always be ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that it is in you” (1 Peter 3:15 NASB). When someone asks about our faith — what we believe and why we believe it — we must be ready to give them an answer. How I pray this video will encourage and empower you as you discover what Jesus believes about the Bible . . . and you should, too.

Discussion Info:

How I wish we could all be together to discuss what the Holy Spirit is teaching us through His Word. But what a blessing it is to hear from you as I read your comments. Although we may be separated by many miles, the Lord is knitting our hearts together as we study and share what we are learning. Let’s continue our online discussion this week by:

  • Posting comments to one or more of the discussion questions below.
  • Reading and replying to the comments other group members post. The way you have been encouraging one another is beautiful. Keep it up, sisters!

Week 3 Discussion Questions:

Question 1: In Day 1 of your homework, you completed an overview of the 7 Distinctives of Devoted Disciples. What did you learn about your own strengths and weaknesses in relationship to these 7 Distinctives? (ques. 2, p. 60)

Question 2:  As you look over your homework from Days 2 & 3, what are some of the dangers of Casual Christianity and not knowing God’s Word?

Question 3:  What was your favorite verse from the Romans 8:1-16 passage and why? (ques. 5, p. 76).

Our Assignment This Week:

  1. Watch the Week 3 video (above) and fill in the listening guide of your Are You a Disciple? workbook (p. 79).
  2. Complete the Week 4 homework which we will discuss next week.
  3. Check your email next week for my Week 4 online study post AND the announcement of the One Year Bible winner.

My prayers are with you, dear sisters! I’ll close with my favorite verse from this week’s homework:

“If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.”  John 8:36 NASB

Your sister in Christ,

LaurieSig

P. S. Are you participating in the online study, but you haven’t posted a comment yet? I would SO love to hear from you this week! And if you’re one of the wonderful women who participated in the Are You a Disciple? pilot, I would love to hear from you, too. Post a comment and let’s reconnect!

#3 – My favorite of those verses is verse 16 – “The Spirit Himself testifies together with our spirit that we are God’s children.” It makes my heart happy that God would say we are His children:)& that nothing can take that away from me.

1)It is easy for me to love others and I know with all my heart that following God’s truth brings peace and freedom. I think praying deeply is an area that I would like to have grow stronger.
    2) If we don’t know God’s word we can’t be obedient. If we are not obedient how can others see God.

3)Verse 12- Therefore, brother and sisters, you have no obligation to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. I love it….who are we going to let win God or Satan. We can always choose to turn our back on sin:)

Audrey, thank you for the great reminder that obeying God is a choice! It’s easy to blame our sin on circumstances or others. But because the Spirit of God lives in us we have the power make the right choice all the time.

for sure! It is so easy to play the blame game! Guilty! AND we can make the choice to not give up and allow through prayer the power of the Holy Spirit to work in us and cause us to take our own sin to the cross and be forgiven!
        Amen!

    1. I think one of my weaknesses tends to be saying too many of my words instead of God’s words. That’s why this study has been so encouraging to me to really dig into God’s word and I feel a hunger for it.
    2. I think if you don’t know God’s word your moral compass goes down. I think many casual Christians would prefer to make decisions on social issues regarding what the culture says instead of what the Bible says. i liked question 2 on Day 3. It put into perspective how not knowing Gods word can trickle down from your family to the church and to the country.
    3. I loved verse 15 because it gives boldness to us. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit and He looks out for our best interest. Thank you Lord for adopting me as your daughter.

I have not been able to purchase the actual workbook but I have been enjoying your posts, Laurie, and everyone’s comments. I was especially super blessed by the above video. I loved hearing your story and how the Holy Spirit came through for you on the airplane! The teaching was FANTASTIC too and I am now even better prepared to make a defense of my faith. I already shared some of your teaching with someone else. Thank you!

#3 This entire passage really spoke to me, but I would have to say that my two favorite parts were Romans 8:3-4 and Romans 8:11-12. Verses 3-4 was a great reminder of God’s sacrifice and the power of what Jesus did for all of us when He died on the cross and verse 11-12 because it shared that as a child of God the spirit lives in me and I should never feel obligated to follow sinful nature because God is on my side.

    1. I think loving those who are unlovely is the hardest for me, those who criticize my husband (he is a pastor) and who claim to be Christians but then allow the enemy to use them to cause division in the church. To love them with the same love, compassion, mercy and grace that I give my “friends”. Learning to truly love like Jesus and forgive like Jesus! I know Jesus is fully working in me to perfect me on that day when I will see Him face to face.
    2. Knowing and obeying God’s Word is the goal of my life! I don’t want to be a casual Christian. God forbid! God’s Word cleanses us, bathes us clean every day through the living water of His Word! A casual Christian just wants security of heaven. I want to know Jesus on a deep cross bearing way everyday! Hear the Word of God and act upon it. Even when my pride gets in the way! learning to sit at the feet of Jesus instead of being busy. This is SO hard for me, I am such a doer!
    3. this was a hard one cause they are all so good! but I did answer verse 2 the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed me from the power of sin that leads to death! Hallelujah! I answered this because it’s all about Jesus! It’s all about His power in me to free me from sin and give me life eternal!
