3 Things You Should NEVER Stop Doing (especially if you’re 50+)

This past Sunday, I ran into one of my favorite mentors at church. Her name is Marjorie Drew. She’s 91-years-old and full of Jesus. As we caught up with one another, we enjoyed the The Most Blessed Conversation and sweet fellowship.

The older Marjorie gets, the more I see Jesus in her beautiful countenance and sparkling blue eyes. God consistently reveals His love, His power, and His faithfulness to me through her, and I always leave her presence encouraged in Christ.

Marjorie regularly practices three spiritual disciplines. They are the very same ones the prophet Daniel practiced, and if you you watched last week’s Front Porch Friday, you know what they are. But just in case you missed it, you will find all three disciplines in Daniel 9:2-3. Take a look:

“I, Daniel, was studying the writings of the prophets. I learned from the word of the LORD, as recorded by Jeremiah the prophet, that Jerusalem must lie desolate for seventy years. So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and fasting.”  Daniel 9:2-3 NLT

Daniel was 80+ years old when he wrote those words. 80+!!!

And these are the three disciplines he (and Marjorie) faithfully practiced well into their latter years:

3 Things You Should Never Stop Doing at 50+

Daniel did not head to the sidelines of life and ministry at age 55, 65, 75, or 80, and aren’t you glad?!

God used 80+-year-old Daniel to unlock the Scriptures for future generations of believers, like us, enabling us to understand the unfolding of God’s timeline and the glorious second coming of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Daniel and Marjorie’s age did not depress or deter them from living productive and purposeful lives well into their latter years.

And it should not deter or depress us either.

Precious sister, whether you’re young or old or anything in between, as long as you walk with God, He will empower you for His purpose.

Practice the three disciplines, and watch God use you, too.

Your sister,

P. S. No Front Porch Friday tomorrow. I’m heading to Pennsylvania for a weekend women’s retreat at Hanover First Church of God in in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Please pray for me and especially for every woman who will be at the retreat. Love!

Laurie, I am very impressed with your website. It is compelling. It makes people want to embrace the word of God and fall in love with God and in particular, Christ’s family. I hope to read more of your blogs and watch more of your videos. I know I can learn a lot from you.

As you point out, God used Daniel when Daniel was 80+ years old “to unlock the Scriptures for future generations of believers, like us, enabling us to understand the unfolding of God’s timeline and the glorious second coming of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.”

Many Christians I know cannot cannot accept that the book of Daniel, which foretold Alexander the Great would conquer the Persian Empire several centuries before the king was born, was divinely inspired. Some say the book of Daniel was written using the myth of Alexander to predict the coming of Christ. So as you point out, one should never stop studying the Word of God and learning God’s Word. Indeed, it is very important for Christians to study the Word daily and reflect on God’s word as they pray and fast. Paul’s letters and the Acts of the Apostles in conjunction with the Prophets have much to teach Christians about the Triune nature of God (1 Corinthians 1: 11-13).

In Acts 18:28 one can read how Apollo refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ. In Acts 18:24 one can read how Apollo was born in the City of Alexander. If one knows the mythology of Alexander the Great, one will know how people believed he was the very incarnation of the the Greek god Apollo. And if one believes the prophecy of Daniel, one may read Acts 18:24 concluding that the Greek Christians of Alexander’s hometown, believed the god of light and prophecy known as Apollo was born in Alexander who could prove Jesus was the prophesied Messiah.

In Acts 19, one can read how Apollo’s sister Artemis had fallen. Paul wanted to go to Ephesus to appear before a large crowd defending Artemis’ divine majesty, however Paul’s friends and chief organizers begged Paul not to. Acts 19:32-33 reads: The assembly was in confusion. Some were shouting one thing, some another. Most of the people did not even know why they were there. The Jews pushed Alexander to the front…He motioned for silence in order to make a defense before the people…”
